- The dog rose is a wild rose found frequently in Europe; the urn-shaped receptacle of the “fruit” is strongly coloured (orange to bright red) and contains very hard seeds surrounded by numerous hairs: the classic itching powder.
- Rosehip was for a long time a precious source of vitamin C for the populations (human and animal) of temperate regions during the winter months. It is traditionally harvested after the first frosts (but can also be harvested before), and the seeds and itching hairs (the itch-producing hairs) are carefully removed.
- It is also an incredible source of pro-vitamin A (beta-carotene) as well as potassium.
